Love one another as I have loved you

By Garold Anderson

Love one another as I have loved you. The world will know that we are Christians by the love that we show to one another. We have a hope and a future in Him.

Kent Hodge

It's been a very nice time. We are starting a school called Christian Faith Academy. It is for the preschool age. They interviewed yesterday and we have chosen two staff. It is great to be a part of what God is doing there.

Esther Hodge

Susie and I are medical students in London and as part of that year we spend a couple of months working in a hospital somewhere else in the world. So we decided to go to Jos. We went to a hospital called Faith Alive Foundation, which is in central Jos, pretty near to where the riots happened last November. It provides free services to Muslims and Christians. It was started by a Nigerian who trained in a prestigious hospital in America, but God told him to go back to Nigeria, and so He obeyed. He started a clinic and offered medicine and counselling for people with HIV. The main work they do there is fighting AIDS. Almost 10% of the population there have HIV. Only 3% of the people who have HIV actually get drugs to fight it and a lot of them are in Nigeria, because of this hospital. He treats people through the support of English churches and an American relief system set up by President Bush to provide AIDS relief for the people in Nigeria.

I used to think of AIDS as a bad disease because I thought it was their fault. But a lot of the people who came there were Muslim girls who were married at very young ages and had got AIDS either from their mothers or their husbands. So, it wasn't really their fault. This doctor is working so hard to help people. Every person he sees he treats as an individual and will pray for them regardless of whether they are a Christian or a Muslim. They treat them with medicine but also holistically.

Every morning at 8 o'clock they have a devotion and someone will preach to them for about half an hour from the Bible and then give a talk on how to stay healthy. One of the biggest problems out there is lack of education. Three ladies came up to me and told me that they couldn't sleep at night and they were really hot. Basically nobody had told them anything.

So first thing in the morning they preach to these people, Christians and Muslims alike. They tell them that God can heal them whether they are Christians or not. So they use the hospital to spread the Gospel as well as to treat people.

The second morning we were there I was sitting in the devotion, and Doctor Chris told me that I had to get up and preach, which I wasn't expecting at all. So I just had to get up and speak to them. I had to do that three times throughout the week. This has really taught me a lot and I am really grateful for the experience. What really struck me was the people because, regardless of what I 'd said, they'd all come up to me and encourage me. They are all so welcoming and friendly. English people I think sometimes tend to be quite judgemental, but the people there are so open and there is so much opportunity to grow there because you can get up and make a fool of yourself and they will still congratulate you afterwards.

The hospital started as a clincic. Basically it treats mostly HIV patients but there are also outpatient and pre-natal clinics. They also teach people how HIV is prevented. It was very interesting listening to the counselling sessions because the people don't know anything about their health. In one session I sat in with a lady who couldn't even read. She had the test done and it turned out negative, but the doctor had to explain what negative meant because she didn't understand it. There was another couple who had been tested a few months earlier, and it turned out that the husband was positive and she was negative. But she didn't believe it because there is period in which the virus for HIV cannot be detected. Anyway, the doctor reassured that she was negative, which was such a good thing for here because it meant that she would be able to have children free from HIV.

I haven't done anything with HIV in this country so it was good to see what they do over there. In the anti-natal sessions they encourage the husbands to get involved. They give the wife an invitation to bring the husband along because if you get the husband involved, he will be more interested in the children. The husband is very important over there because the wives actually have to ask their husbands if they can take the medicines given by the doctor. So having the doctors there means that the wives are more likely to take the medicine.

What really interested me was that this was a Christian hospital, but there were Christians there of all denominations, and they all worked together and prayed together. I think it was more a church than a hospital. They were Christians all with different backgrounds with a common goal: they wanted to reach out and help others. They come together, they have devotion and preaching in the morning, then Dr. Chris prays with his patients, then in the afternoon they pray together. So it is a church, they are group of Christians working together to help others.

We had the chance to go to other areas of the hospital, for example they have clinics outside the hospital. On the second week they had a conference for tribal leaders about preventing and treating HIV. This is very helpful because couples go to these leaders to ask if they should get married if the husband is possible, and they also ask them about using condoms. It was really interesting to see how the Christians discussed this issue.

Good morning. Well before I begin I would like to say again how wonderful it has been to be with and Laurie and I truly feel a part of this body of believer. So it's just exciting to be back again after so many years and then after our few visits with you in the last year or so.

I just want to make sure that the things I have said recently have been remembered. With the children at school, we looked at the story of the three little pigs and the building blocks of our lives. Because Jesus told a story that was like that with two people who built their houses on two different things.

I'm going to talk about a very strong building block of our lives, a strong foundation. With the Logos group we talked about a strong issue of foundation. I gave the challenge to think about these next months and take some time to pray. One of the ideas was, what is it that convinces us that God is real? And if not, what is standing in our way to be convinced? What is the foundation of our lives?

As I come to the end I will come into prayer. The building blocks of our lives is a part of what I want to talk about. I'm usually a creative person and I create many things. On Friday we did a play by someone else which was a modern day version of Adam and Eve and the breaking down of a relationship. It was a very painful story and it is at this point that I want to begin today.

The testimonies that we had from Nigeria were so fascinating and it's amazing how God really brings everything together for a Sunday service. We cannot do everything but our God can and we can work together with him.

A promise, a prayer and a command.

I want to begin with a simple prayer.

Ish and Isha, in the play that we did on Friday, it was the use of drama to convey the reality of what sin and brokeness really has done.We often read the story of Adam and Eve it often remains a story on the page. In this play, we really brought it painfully to life, with modern day people and circumstances. This is the beauty of knowing God and this is the beauty of Christianity that there is a way forward.

I want to begin with a promise.

I have been praying for this time with you and this is something God placed on my heart for us. And though this promise was spoken to the children of Israel many years agao but it can still play a part in our lives.

Jeremiah 29:11 (show/hide)

Years ago when I was much more wise than I am now, I would think about the words in scripture that were powerful: oo FAITH! And another powerful word would be LOVE. It's a soft word of God but it's love that brought Jesus to the cross. I thought hope was a weak word. I hope I can...

Listen to this, the promise: I know the plans he has for you, not for disaster..to give you a hope.

I have learnt that it is one of the strongest words in scripture.

There are things in life that happen to people; there are times when people find they have a disease in their body called HIV, Aids. And when people face these things, they lose all hope. There are times in relationships that people see no way forward and they lose all hope. There are times even in churches that we face difficulties together and we begin to lose perspective and we lose hope.

Before we can really come to the place of FAITH we've got to have hope. Hope. Ok, I want to a little theatrical exercise with you. I want you to say the word hope with me. I want you to repeat it the way I say it.

We need to know that we have a future. When we find ourselves hitting a wall and in difficult places, how do we know that we have a hope and a future. Because God is our God. God has a plan for your church and for your life. Even if you find that this church is not where you want to stay, there is a hope for me and a hope for everyone here; here is a future. We're not talking about some kind of social club, we're talking about the living body of Crhist. Whether we are here or in Nigeria or in London; the living body of Chrsit. We have a hope and a future. God knows the plans for you, for your welfare and that are not for disaster.

Jeremiah 29:12 (show/hide)

There are many things that are before you. There are many things. There are many decisions before you in the very close future of this church. Many important things that this church needs to decide and do. I think the cameras that you have...the facilities are amazing. That's a sideline. With your life, and with the relatiionshiops tha are here, things need to be accomplished.

You have to begin by asking why and what. God says, you will come and you will pray and I will listen.

Can you imagine if I came here to speak to you, and as I was speaking, my feet began to do what they wanted. You see it doesn't work if the body doesn't work together. Communiciation doesn't work if the body doesn't work together. Paul says such a powerful thing: 'How can the hand say to the foot, 'I don't need you'. Paul says, 'No, this is the beauty and the amazing thing about Christianity: it's a body.' Each part is needed. Each part has a very important thing to bring. You have a very important role and part to play within this body. You. But somehow within it, we've got to find a way to work together. So we begin with knowing that God says we have a future. God has plans for us to give us a hope and a future.

A command.

The thing that is on my heart to deposit here today is foundational. It's just solid rock. I really pray that we are able to take this seed because this is the heart of christinaty. I want you to imagine with me, from the gospel of john...

This takes place at the end of the ministry of Jesus. This is the end of his time with his disciples; those he has been mentorying. As he comes to the end, he's going to say, 'guys just remember brush your teeth everyday'. I think he would say something a bit more serious. 'Ok guys, always keep the other guys guessing.' No. What would you do if this was the last day with your family? You know this is the last moment, you would think real hard and say what is the most important seed thatI can plant into their life. And that's exactly what Jesus does.

We've been through a lot together and now it's coming to the end...

John 13:31-34 (show/hide)

'A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another'.That is a very powerful command and then He goes on and adds something else: 'That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.'

The Bible is really specific. We know love because love has been defined for us. While we were enemies of God, He extended his love through his Son to us. God proved his love in that way. This is how we know love; that Christ died for us. We don't just have some kind of idea of love. We have a real definition and that is the thing that transforms my life, is that I have a real solid definition of love in the one that I am following.

'Love one another, in the same way that I have loved you.' That brings us hopefully to a place that we heard in a song earlier. We can't love others without him. Remain in me and you can do this. Without him we cannot walk in that kind of love.

I want you to understand how important this was when he spoke these words to his disciples.

John 13:35 (show/hide)

He didn't say, 'if you can stop all conflict...' No. Love one another. We are different. We have different parts to play and it is within us, that Jesus gives us the command to love one another, as he has loved us. It is an amazing command and he expects that we can do it.

This is how people will know you are my disciples, if you love one another.

I just want to accent this by looking at John 15.

John 15:9-10 (show/hide)

John 15:12 (show/hide)

John 15:17 (show/hide)

It's a thing he keeps repeating to his disiples and something that needs to reverberate in the depths of our souls. Love one another as I have loved you. He says it again. Here's my command, love one another. And then he says it again.

Be so concenered about one another, even if you disagree. Because this is the power. God IS love. The power on this earth that created all things that are is love. God, the power that can stand against the fiery furnace, is love. Christ is about to go the cross, the absolute example of love, and he's talking to his disiples about love.

I want to leave us with a prayer. A promise that God has a future for us. God has spokem to use because God has plans for us. God loved the world so much that he sent his Son, and his own sons and daughters into the world. But this is how it's all going to happen: Love one another.

God gave his disciples a simple format of a prayer. He said 'Our father, who art in heaven, your name is holy. You are the name above all. You are the God who made all things. Holy is your name.' That's where Jesus begins in the prayer to focus on God. 'May your kingdom and your ways come on earth, just as they happened in heaven. May your ways come into my life, just as it happens in heaven. Jesus bring your love and your possibility of loving and giving into my life, just as your will is accomplished in heaven. Today, give me what I need, the depth of my soul and the strength to do what is before me today. And I ask in my own life, that your forgiveness would come. Forgive me. Have mercy on me. So I also say, forgive those who have done something against me. Give me the hope to be able to forgive. Help me to get past my weakness and to forgive those who have done things against me. And I would ask that you would lead us away from the paths of temptation and from the evil. Deliver us. And give us a hope and a future. For thine is the kingdom of love and forgiveness and hope a future. Thine is the power to accomplish these things in my life. And thine is the glory. And as we follow you, we proclaim that it is you who does these things. Amen.'

Be Ye Holy as He is Holy

We are told to be holy as God is holy. That’s not some impossible requirement – we are called to be holy, because God has made it possible for us to be holy.

On Friday we set the scene for 1 Peter. The letter was written to churches in modern Turkey. At the time the letter was written, people were becoming aware of Nero’s persecution in Rome.

1 Peter 1:7

There was no doubt that at the time they received this letter – or certainly soon after – the persecution was very apparent and very real.

I mentioned how things happen in life and it’s our response to those happenings ... when something happens, the resulting pressure – the need for healing, for finance, for finding a particular solution – that pressure is something much more precious than gold.

I said that Peter knew the pressure there was when he denied Christ. He wasn’t in the best frame of mind at that point. But Jesus returned to speak to Peter – “Do you love me? Do you love me?” And Jesus drew out the guilt. And Peter was aware of the trial when Jesus gave His life – and for Peter, Jesus’ resurrection was specifically for Him, Peter.

Jesus returned also specifically for Thomas so that his faith would be unshakeable.

This morning we’ll look at how God is involved with you. It doesn’t matter what frame of mind you came in here with, the prompting of that frame of mind is a result of God already speaking to you. God makes us aware of our heart condition, of our need of Him. He causes us to realise that without Him there is no way forward. That realisation comes specifically to you this morning from a God of love.

We’ll look at some very practical things we can be doing to make sure we go forward in the right way.

1 Peter 1:1-16

The holiness of God – he mentions now. The quote “Be ye holy” comes from Leviticus. When it says that, it’s not some impossibility, that God casts down as a requirement. When Peter refers to this, it doesn’t say that we should be omnipotent like God, or omniscient. It’s that we should be holy as He is holy. What does that mean?

We also have the idea of being sanctified, set apart, different. God isn’t telling us to do our best, and we might hit it or not. Through God’s, mercy and the death of Jesus Christ, imputing to you the satisfaction that a holy God can now see through the sacrifice of the Lamb of God the resolution of the requirements of the law.

“Be ye holy” states that God is holy; and He gives you the capability of being holy. Each day we become more and more like Him, until we see Him face to face. There’s a sense in which it has all been done: sin has been dealt with, the price paid, the Lamb sacrificed. But there’s still a progressive aspect – we’re changed from glory to glory. We’re perfected as each day passes.

Maybe you’ve come wishing that God would do something, and believing it has to come from Him because you can’t do anything. These verses will help you. Peter points out that there is something you can do. You’re hearing this word this morning because God is working things out. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God.

1 Peter 1:13

We need to be ready to run. We need to be serious.

1 Peter 1:14

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

His prayer for them was that the God of peace would make them holy as individuals.

For some people who are trying to sort things out – perhaps finding it difficult – you can think back to the time when perhaps your parents dedicated you as a baby to God. The prayers of your parents were valid. God heard them. And faithful is He who calls you now who also will do it. You’re not here by accident. The stirring in your heart which may have made you realise there’s an emptiness inside, something which needs to be sorted out ... that realisation is God working in you.

I said to the school children that perhaps they were waiting for God to write their name in the sky, waiting for some cataclysmal event. But your realisation that something has to change ... that in itself is God working in an individual. That’s valid.

I referred to God the Holy Spirit working in you. Why is He called holy? Holiness matters. There’s a way of life where we have choices ... ally that to the working of God’s Holy Spirit working inside, and there’s an irresistible force going forward through the nature change on the inside, as God outworks His purposes inside you.

1 Peter 1:17

“Call on the father” – maybe you’ve prayed, calling out for help.

“Fear” means reverence, not some cowering thing.

1 Peter 1:18

“Vain tradition” means empty way of life.

1 Peter 1:19-21

It’s good to call on the Father. And in this whole passage ... Peter has in mind what happened at the Passover, when they were led out of Egypt, were led out of the land, and entered a land flowing with milk and honey. In the same way, as God outworks His purposes in your life, He’s calling you out of the old empty way of life which does not work, and He’s saying we should desire the sincere milk of the word.

1 Corinthians 5:7-8

With the young people, it was apparent that under God’s direction, there was the ability and security of folk being honest, sincere, coming to the truth.

The light now coming into the hall is symptomatic of what God is doing, bringing to light His truth by His Holy Spirit – unearthing things, not to condemn or point the finger, but because faithful is He who called you, who also will do it. He’s working on your life. You say you have quite a few questions still. He knows that, and He has started answering those questions.

“Purge out the old leaven” means there’s a way of life we can adhere to, and as God reveals things which need changing, it will be because those things will change.

Ephesians 1:6

It’s all to do with His love for you. He’s holy. He can’t abide sin. There is no sin in heaven, no darkness. God Himself never changes and He is holy.

The more I’ve thought about this, the more it’s come home – the impact which it must have had on God when the sin of the world was put on to His Son. And that was the only way that you and I could become accepted into the beloved – that we could stand in front of a holy God.

But it’s not just that God has done that. There are things that you can I could be doing. Maybe you couldn’t quote a day when you were born again. All the same, God is at work in you – even here this morning. And He doesn’t want to try to shoehorn each one of us into the same experience. We don’t have to be blinded on a donkey on the way to Damascus – otherwise Paul would have promoted the idea.

God is at work in your heart this morning. Sometimes we get so caught up trying to pinpoint things. Have I been born yet? Am I one year old yet? You get caught up with these things and lose sight of the fact that it’s God we’re involved with, and that Jesus gave His life so that you might be free.

Our liberty in Christ is our freedom not to sin. The work of Christ on the cross has made you free not to sin. Before that you can’t but sin. The whole book of Galatians is about how we use that freedom and whether we allow licence or legalism to come in. But God puts in us the power to live right.

1 Peter 1:19-22

No hidden agenda, no secret whispers.

1 Peter 1:23

It is the Word of God which lives and abides forever.

In verse 24, he compares the eternal Word of God with where things are in this world.

1 Peter 1:24-25

Isaiah 40:3-8

It’s great that at every level, the aim is for every age group to be studying the Word of God. That’s what we want to do. We want the Word of God to be central to what we’re about. We want to be excited by studying God’s word. If anyone feels we could do better in this, please tell me. That’s the aim. Because everything else will fade. His Word is where it’s at. And thank God for the freedom we have to study His word. And through His Holy Spirit, God speaks to us – in the beginning was the Word.

1 Peter 2:1-3

Have you tasted that the Lord is gracious? Are you aware that maybe there is an answer for you? It just needs a taste as it were. This is where the milk and honey of the Promised Land comes in. Just as a baby desires milk, you desire the sincere milk of the word so that you can grow.

Psalms 34:1-8

There’s a testimony! David is rejoicing. “I sought the Lord. He heard me and delivered me.” Those fears you’ve had have to go. Perfect love casts out fear. Jesus Christ has become your life, and perfect love casts out fear. That’s not mind over matter.
Fears – be gone!

God knows what He is doing in your life, and the trial of your faith is more precious than gold.
Peter really wanted people to know that relationship with God, to know that they need not fear.

1 Peter 2:1

We’re one in Christ. There’s something He’s called us to, and the outworking of that is that you love one another fervently, and you lay aside all this other stuff, because, like a baby, we desire the sincere milk of the word – if so be you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

I’m excited by what God is revealing in each person’s life. I think it’s a time when there is not only a reassessment of the foundation of life. There’s more. There’s a realisation from God by His Holy Spirit that you as an individual ... He’s more concerned about you than you are. He loves you.

We’re talking here about sincerity, about truth, about His Holy Spirit – who He is.

“Gird up, be sober, be ye holy, call on the Father, lay aside, desire the milk.” Peter wasn’t going to leave them in any doubt. It was practical stuff. You weren’t to sit back and wait for God to do something. You were to get on with things and trust to Him that He would do what He had called you for.

He’s wonderful!

Encourage one another. If someone is in trouble, look to see what you can do to help. Pray. Pray that the right person will speak to them, that they will become dissatisfied with a way which they know to be wrong but have become trapped in, so that God in His mercy and love will become their solution.

Nehemiah (Part 2 of 9) - The Good Hand of God is Upon You

The good hand of God is upon us. He orchestrates the circumstances in our lives so that we are drawn towards Him in prayer for the solution. As Nehemiah knew, when he came before the King, that was the crunch time. God delights in prompting us to pray and then being the answer to our prayers. God’s solution will be over and above what we could ever ask or think. He loves us, and He wants us to go forward in Him so that, through us, He can draw others to Himself.

Just a brief word concerning what we looked at previously, it was the first part of Nehemiah.

In chapter 1, Nehemiah thought that the building work in Jerusalem was continuing but when he heard about the state of the walls and that the work had ceased, it was not the news he had expected.

Nehemiah held a prominent position in that he was the cup-bearer to the King. It was as if by chance that someone brought back a report concerning the work. Jerusalem had been taken into captivity; it had become a laughing stock.

Nehemiah was shocked because he had thought that things were progressing. His initial reaction to this news was that he prayed.

What’s been going on in your life has been prompted by God for you to get on your knees before Him. It’s God’s delight for us, in humility, to come before Him and ask Him for the solution. Without that pressure or that problem we wouldn’t be on our knees.

Nehemiah 1:4

And then He prays. He reminds God of His mercy.

Nehemiah 1:11

At the beginning of chapter two it goes forward a few months.

Nehemiah 2:1

For four months Nehemiah could think of nothing else but Jerusalem. For some of you, in the situation you’re in, you’ve been thinking of nothing else. Each time you’ve thought about it there’s a sort of compression inside causing you to ask God for help. You know that you need God as the solution. That is not despair. That is the crystal clear reality of you realising who God is and what He wants to do for you. It says in James that we have not because we ask not, or we ask for things that are the wrong motive. But you need to ask.

For Nehemiah it was four months. It might be the shock you’ve had has been in your work situation or it might be in a relationship. That shock to your system is there because our God, who is our loving heavenly Father, wants you and me to be co-workers together with Him, as we witness the solution He is and He will be in your situation. It’s as if He knows just the right situation that, if you like, takes over our thinking, and causes us to say ‘Lord. You’ve got to work this out’.

Individually I can see that God is stirring in our hearts that we need to get hold of Him ourselves via His Word and prayer. There’s going to come a time when a characteristic of this group of people is that we are a people who know our God and who see Him answering prayer. He loves us.

For Nehemiah he was praying and he knew that God had to give him the answer. He was humble even though he had a high position in the land.

Nehemiah 2:2

It comes to that point where you’ve been praying and now it’s the crunch time. There was something in Nehemiah, because he knew that this was it. He knew that the King was going to ask about what had been bugging him all those months; Nehemiah didn’t know how the King was going to react. But he knew, by a God given urgency inside, it was now. Let’s translate that into your life. There comes a time in your life when you know that God has brought about a situation and now is the crunch time. You’ve been praying about it: now’s the time.

Nehemiah 2:3

I was trying to figure out the tone of his voice when he said that because he was letting the King know what he had been thinking about all those months.

Nehemiah 2:4

That was a surprise! He thought the King was going to be dismissive of what he was thinking about. The King had heard about the building of the wall but the King didn’t respond as Nehemiah thought he would. The answer that God gives you will be a surprise to you as well. Our God is a God who answers our prayers. Our God is a God who is strong; He’s the King of Kings. He knows what He is doing.

So Nehemiah prayed to the God of Heaven. Nehemiah was not thinking of himself, he was thinking of the people in Jerusalem. Here he had the King’s attention. It is God’s delight to answer our prayers, prompted by His Holy Spirit. The outworking of His purposes are sure. You can’t stop the mighty moving force of God, even though you might try.

We’ll see later in this chapter those who were mocking and scornful. But nothing can stop the mighty force of God. That force is a force of love who will outwork His purpose in your life. It’s important how you react to the pressures in life. You must pray.

Nehemiah 2:5 – 6

Are you ready for God’s answer? God will answer you. What God is doing in your life is developing that faith inside you, the faith that He’s given you. He’s making you more aware of who He is.

My foundation is Jesus Christ. My foundation is that, going forward, I want to do what God wants me to do. When God answers, the answer is clear and sure. I’ll tell you where I’m at. I am aware that God is going to build on the foundation that He’s laid in this place. It’s as if we’re going forward to outwork what He wants us to do. Now’s the time.

It’s interesting that Nehemiah set the King a length time that he’d be away for: he was ready with an answer. The expectation of Nehemiah is that God would answer. When you’re thinking about your future, God’s been speaking to you; you need to get on with it.

Nehemiah 2:7 – 8

The good hand of God is upon you. It’s a good hand. You may say that I don’t understand your situation, but I do know that it is a good hand. When Nehemiah walked out of that meeting he couldn’t believe what had happened. Nehemiah was giving up a lot to do this; he had been the cupbearer of the King. Sometimes God asks things of us, a change of direction. In his heart Nehemiah knew that he had to go. He was prepared to go even before the King had granted him his request. He had thought about it but hadn’t known how he would be able to go. He asked God to open up the way for him because he couldn’t see a solution. If we wait for God’s timing it is a good thing. God will bring the answer at the right time.

Nehemiah 2:9

Not only was the King allowing Nehemiah to go back to Jerusalem but he was providing the transport for him to get there. God answers our prayers over and above what we could ask or think.

Nehemiah 2:10

It grieved them because they thought they had got King Artaxerxes to end the work in Jerusalem.

Nehemiah 2:11

When he got there he surveyed the situation. It’s not a bad thing to stop and take stock of your life. We must evaluate what is the foundation of our lives and what is our ambition. People might say that we are weak because we have to rely on God. Anyone who speaks like that is breathing the air that God gives them. They have life from him. Often when someone speaks like that it’s out of frustration in their life. Nehemiah wasn’t a ‘goody-two-shoes’, but he knew his God. Deep down you know your God. Sanballat and Tobiah didn’t like the fact that Nehemiah came.

Nehemiah 2:12 – 16

When you take a survey of your life, you are checking on the progress and the motives of your life. Is it the case, as far as you are concerned, that as a Christian God has a freeway in your life so that you can share with others the life of Christ within you? We are to love one another so that others can see and be drawn to the One who has caused us to have that love: Jesus Christ. The great commission from Jesus is to share our faith, His faith that God has put inside us.

The older people in the church are of value to us because they are prepared to do what God wants them to do. ‘These walls must be rebuilt’, Nehemiah said. As he was riding to Jerusalem he was thinking how wonderfully God had worked everything out. He knew that now was the time, so he decided to survey the situation.

Nehemiah 2:16 – 18

God’s timing. It didn’t take much to convince the people in Jerusalem of the need. They knew that he had come. Nehemiah told them he had come because of the ‘hand of my God which was good upon me’. He said that to encourage them to realise that it was the time to rise up and build.

God has a work for us to do. The wonderful thing is that the work He has for us corporately is being mirrored in your individual lives. That’s why the circumstances in your life are as they are now. God is ensuring that you are aware of the foundation of God in your life. He’s ensuring that your focus is right. He’s ensuring that there is a resolve to get hold of God for the solution. God gave you that resolve.

What’s going to be the result of that? That you will fulfil what God wants to be in your life so that His life can flow through you and affect those around you for good. In your life, as you succeed in the circumstances you’re in, witnessing and testifying to the faithfulness of God in your life, so there will be that flow from you to others. You will know that there is someone that can help others. His name is Jesus Christ.

Sanballat and Tobiah, and now another fellow, heard what Nehemiah said.

Nehemiah 2:19

The resolve in Nehemiah had increased.

Nehemiah 2:20

No discussion. ‘What you’re saying is against our God. Our God is the God of heaven and He will sort things out. He is the One we trust. We are strong because of the resolve He has given us.’ Some people twist it as if we are weak because we need God in our life. It is the complete opposite. There is no one here, and I mean that, who is outside of this thought, that together you’re involved in what God is going to do in our midst.

In your individual life you will find over the next weeks a resolve that God has put into you to stand your ground. A resolve to be open to what God wants you to do, to be. You are here on this earth for a reason. God wants to outwork His purposes in you. The circumstances in your life will cause you to get closer to God through prayer. It’s to the end that we will fulfil what God wants us to do corporately, that is, to reach out to those who have no answer. Now if I were to say ‘Ok, I’m in’, is that me convincing you in some rally-type turn? No, it’s God through this account in Nehemiah. Today God has been asking you what it is going to be for you.

This credit crunch has brought an additional pressure. Did God know about that coming? Yes. Did He know about the affect it would have on you? Yes. The God of heaven will prosper us.

Philippians 3:13 – 14

Today, the middle of verse 13 is important for you and for me: “forgetting those things which are behind”. And then in verse 14: “pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”

Today, in your situation in your life, the good hand of God is upon you. It’s not the devil: it’s the good hand of God. He knows what He’s doing. That God of love, in your situation, whether you're single, married, widowed, whatever situation you are in, it’s the good hand of God upon you. He loves you.

Nehemiah (Part 1 of 9) - He Delights to Answer Prayer

Ezra heard about a situation, and God set it upon his heart to resolve it. There are things that you know, before God, you want him to sort out. Ezra knew that the information he was given was something that he had to respond to. There might be something in your life, where it’s as if you’ve been propelled into the arms of God through praying.

This the background to the information that Ezra received:

Ezra 4:11

Artaxerxes was king of Persia. Some people had gone back to Jerusalem to start rebuilding the walls, because Israel had been taken over by Babylon and were in captivity. Jerusalem, therefore, was in ruins.

Ezra 4:17

The work was ended. Nehemiah had heard about the Jews going back and he thought things were happening, but then Nehemiah heard the work had ceased, and it got to him.

Nehemiah 1:1

It was a shock, because what he expected to hear was that it was great, that they had got on with it and work was progressing. But, no. The work had ceased. Sometimes we come across a situation where it is a shock, and we can’t figure out how we didn’t see it coming, or how it had ended up like this.

Nehemiah 1:4

This affected him for days. He couldn’t get it out of his mind. It might be that something you’re facing is something where you need a resolution in God. You will see God provide the answer.

Nehemiah 1:5

Nehemiah was at one with the people who had gone to build the walls. He immediately linked up with them, and it was as if he took them with him to God. As time progressed, it dawned on him that he was in a position that God had put him in for that time. You are in a position for such a time as this. Whatever the situation you’re facing, whatever the mountain it seems you have to go over, whatever the valley you have to go through, you are alive tonight for such a time as this. You will prove for yourself the faithfulness of God and the way he will invigorate, change the situation, and be the answer.

Nehemiah 1:8

He remembered what God had previously said.

Deuteronomy 4:25

Nehemiah 1:10

God will provide the solution. You don’t have the solution. It’s not a vague hope – not at all. It’s God who is prompting you to pray. By his Holy Spirit he is getting hold of you. He delights to answer and to prove himself to be the solution. He is a merciful God who loves you, and he involves us.

Luke 18:1

Here is a judge who will sort it out just to get rid of the woman, and that was an unjust judge who said that.

Luke 18:7

The prompting of God in your life at the moment to pray is because God is going to answer what you are praying. The answer is coming, and it is on it’s way. But the timing will be perfect. It will be at a time when you conclusively know that the solution is from Him, and you accept it as such. It’s not what I’m going to do – it’s what he is going to do. He has prompted you to pray in the way that you are praying.

With Nehemiah, when this news came, it immediately caused him to go to God. There was a resolve in him to make a stand before his God. God delights to answer that prayer. Prayer is where God delights for you and for me to become co-workers with him. He doesn’t need to bother with us really but he loves us, and somehow, when he prompts that prayer inside, it’s his delight for us to realise that we know who made the provision. It is as if we are co-workers with him.

Nehemiah 1:11

He kept praying, and the solution came four months later. Do you have to pray for a certain amount of time to twist God’s arm to be the answer? Absolutely not. It is simply that he somehow causes things that we pray for, and it is his delight to answer at the perfect time and provide a complete solution.

Who am I trusting? Where is my faith? Who is the God I believe in? With Nehemiah, when this news came to him, it forced him onto his knees.

The prayer you’ve already prayed, God has heard. It is not wrong to pray about something more than once. And God delights to answer.

You can take everything to God and he delights for us to do that. Your need for an answer causes you to get hold of God more than ever before.

God will provide the solution. He delights to become co-workers with us, in the solution that he always is.

God Already has Your Answer

God has heard your prayer and He already has the answer. He is the answer. As with Peninnah, who prayed every year to have a child, He will answer your prayer. It is His delight to prompt you to pray and then to be the answer to that prayer. God loves communicating with us. Jesus came for His people, for the church and we are part of that church. God will answer your prayer because He loves you. You can be relaxed in the knowledge that God is in control. You must accept this as Mary accepted what the angel told her, because God does love you and with God all things are possible.

It’s wonderful to know that when things are seemingly barren and wrong, and you’re not sure if God is sorting things out, that it is God’s delight every time, to be the answer. He outworks His solution in a way we don’t expect. His solution is the best. I want to look at two episodes in two ladies lives. The first one just hung in there and God’s solution came. And the second realised the eternal purposes of God as she was to be the one to bear the Messiah. By the end of this morning I want you to know that at this point in time, no matter what has been an attempt to write things off, to hold up the white flag and say there is no answer, I want you to know in your heart of hearts that God is in control and He knows what He is doing. He has heard you.

1 Samuel 1:1-5

The situation was obvious, but to Hannah it was grievous. Her grief was that Peninnah had produced children, but she had not.

1 Samuel 1:6-8

With Hannah it was that things were not as she wanted them to be. It got to her because she wanted to have a baby. The taunting of Peninnah was unkind and uncalled for. There’s something about a taunt to someone who’s standing up for what is right that is from the pit. Don’t taunt anyone who is trying to go right. Don’t write a family off because they have one child who is in a predicament at the moment. You have to stand together and help each other.

1 Samuel 1:9-22

1 Samuel 1:26-28

God has not forgotten the prayers you have made for your children. The more these weeks progress the more it becomes apparent that in quite a few lives there has been a reassertion in the faith that God has given you. He’s caused you to believe that what you prayed before He has heard. God answered Hannah’s prayer. I don’t care what taunt there has been in the past to you. I want to confirm to you that God is a God of love and what He has done in your life of late is to form a relationship with you. The pressure has caused you to pray more and He has heard your prayers. Hannah’s song will be echoed later when we read the song of Mary. This is the song she prayed after she had dedicated Samuel.

1 Samuel 2:1-10

No gloating there. No going round to Peninnah and saying ‘you see’. My God has heard me. It’s not the fact that He’s my God, it’s who God is. This song is so wonderful because it reveals how God doesn’t take what the world views as strong – 1 Samuel 2: 2. The enemy of your souls might point the finger at you and convince that you’re never going to get blessed because of what you have done. Your God, who is a God of love, is someone who listens, draws alongside and knows what He’s doing in response to your prayer. It is God’s delight to prompt us to pray. We are then co-workers with Him because He has prompted us to pray and we then witness His answer. God loves communication with us. God’s nature is to communicate His life with you and me.

Luke 1:28-37

That was news to Mary because she didn’t know her cousin was pregnant. She thought that Elizabeth was too old, but with God nothing is impossible.

Luke 1:38

Your life based on the Word of God and with His life inside you will stand sure. Your God is someone who hears you. He is the King of Kings. He created heaven and earth. I want to confirm to you that your God is a faithful God. All the way through the circumstances you’ve had over the past weeks He has been there, He’s heard you. It’s His delight to be the answers to the prayers that He has prompted you to pray.

Luke 1:40-45

You can’t stop God’s goodness to you. You can’t stop God’s love for you. It doesn’t matter what people have said to you, you cannot stop the love of God operating in your life. For Mary, Elizabeth’s child was a confirmation.

Luke 1:46-54

These words are an echo of what Hannah says. Mary knew, from the book of the Prophets, what Hannah had said. The common denominator between there words was that they both glorified God. I want to encourage you to stand your ground and to realise that your faith is rightly placed in Him. I believe in my God who has saved me and given me life. You can trust Him. The word to you is that the prayers that you have prayed have been heard. I am particularly making reference to any of you who have family members who aren’t here this morning. The prayer that you prayed has been prompted by God.

How old was Mary? Some say she was fifteen. There was an awareness that somehow she was going to be the one that would bear the Messiah.

Luke 1:54

In those words she linked the father of the faithful, Abraham, the seed of Abraham, right through to Jesus, the One who would save us from our sins.

Genesis 17:1-8

The everlasting Covenant given to Abraham means that God forever and ever is with His people. His people are to as many as God will call. It includes you all. In physical terms we were talking there about the gathering of Canaan. But as you know this is a picture of us possessing our souls. Mary knew that there would be a son born of God, who is in a direct line of outworking God’s purposes from Abraham. And at the end of time the church would be the bride of Christ. That’s why He’s interested in you because you are part of the bride of Christ.

Luke 1:46-54

Galations 3:13-14
Galations 3:28-29

What’s that promise? The promise is that the Holy Spirit was given. In your life you can be at ease knowing that God is outworking His purposes for good in your life. Stand your ground. The pressures that you’re in at the moment don’t let the enemy of your soul taunt you. Stand fast in your God. Lift Him up. During this coming week find some time when you can think about this word and apply it to your life. We need to be witnesses of God’s love to others.

God has heard your prayer. He will step in and help because He loves you. It’s not that you have to chalk up brownie points for Him to answer; He loves you. In the same way with Hannah, where the taunting year after year was hellish, so it was that God answered He prayer. With Mary there was that immediate acceptance of ‘be it according to thy word’. And Jesus was born in Bethlehem. His life was given that you and I could be made free from the penalty and power of sin. We can be in relationship with God because of what Jesus did for us.

Carol Concert 2008

The Bible is the Word of God and what we read in the Bible is something God wants to communicate to us. In the beginning was the Word, and you use words to communicate. God wanted to communicate. In the Garden of Eden, the voice of God walked. God is a communicating God. God may use the words I now speak to help you discover who He is.

On Friday as I was thinking about what to speak to you, there was a car crash just outside my house. My immediate thought was, was anyone hurt? There wasn’t anyone fatally hurt, but it affected me, because I was thinking about Jesus Christ and life.

I can relay to you all kinds of oddities in the world – the credit crunch, a $50bn fraud in New York, a 13-year-old boy as a suicide bomber ... There are strange things in this world. I want to concentrate on the fact that Jesus Christ is alive today. Christmas is followed by Easter, the time when we remember that Jesus Christ gave His life for you and me.

The angel Gabriel came to Mary, and it was a real surprise to her.

Luke 1:26-31

The meaning of the name Jesus is Saviour. Why is He called that? Because He came to save His people from their sins. Sins are what grips you on the inside, and maybe there’s a habit of life you can’t get free of. You know it’s wrong. There’s almost an automatic default to go wrong until Jesus saves a person from their sin.

For Mary it was a complete surprise. How shall this be?

Mary had a cousin called Elizabeth. She and her husband Zacharias were old and had always wanted to have a child. In Luke 13:1 it was obvious that they prayed for a child. And the same angel who spoke to Mary earlier had spoken to Zacharias :-

Luke 1:13

Zacharias was dumbfounded. Our prayer is heard. Maybe you’ve prayed something this year. You may not be what people regard as a Christian, but maybe something has jolted you this year and you’ve prayed. God heard your prayer. And the words you are hearing now are involved with the answer He is bringing to you. It may be you’re hearing this on a TV programme. You’ve come to your wits’ end and wonder what life is all about. It could be the first Christmas without a loved one who has gone this year and it’s jolted you.

Luke 1:24-25

Mary didn’t know Elizabeth was pregnant. She knew her, knew they had always wanted to have a child. But now they were too old. It was impossible. Suddenly there is a confluence for two women who became pregnant. It was when Elizabeth was six months pregnant when the angel appeared to Mary.

Luke 1:36

That was a shock to Mary. The angel appeared, talked to her about a son she was going to have. And now she was told that her cousin Elizabeth was already six months pregnant.

Luke 1:37

She knew it was an impossibility. They were far too old. But now having confirmed to her what had happened to Elizabeth (she went down and visited her), the angel said with God nothing shall be impossible.

Luke 1:38

His mercy is from generation to generation. How many generations have passed since the events recorded here, I wonder? People are very involved in tracing their ancestry. I wonder if there was anyone in your ancestry who prayed for you. It may well be that you are here tonight because of someone who prayed for you. There was someone who prayed for you as a little child, and God is bringing the answer to that prayer – He’s brought you here to hear that Jesus Christ came to the earth to save you from your sin, to make you new again on the inside.

Luke 1:37

I want to go forward about 30 years to when Jesus Himself was speaking about this very thing.

Matthew 19:25

With God all things are possible. That thing you’ve ruled out, that disease the medical profession has given up on (we’re not against medicine) with men things are impossible, but with God all things are impossible. Things have happened as they have so that God could speak to you, and He’s doing so because He loves you. He’s speaking to you right now by the power of His Holy Spirit because He loves you.

What does that mean? He knows all about you and despite everything inside you which you know is wrong, He has come even now and is saying, “I love you”, and the reason Jesus Christ came to this earth was to give you a new beginning on the inside. The life I begin with is wrong, but when Jesus Christ comes, He comes inside a person miraculously, and as Mary discovered at the wedding at Cana, she said, “Whatever Jesus says, do it – He’ll sort it out.”

So you’re saying to me amidst all the turmoil of the world, that God wants my attention to change me on the inside? Then why doesn’t He just go ahead and do it? He won’t force Himself on anyone. But Jesus Christ died on the Cross, took into Himself the sin of the world and was raised from the dead. He’s alive and I can confidently say by the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus Christ loves you and gave Himself for you.

We’re talking about the baby Jesus and why He came.

What can I do about this? You need to stop putting off your involvement with Jesus Christ. This is life-concerning. We’re not talking about a whim, a resolution which you take up and then drop. We’re talking about your life on the inside being different. We’re talking about a life transformed on the inside. That’s why we’re singing the hymns we’re singing.

Jesus Christ is the answer. Make contact with us. We want to help you. We’re not out to build an empire, but to share the good news of Jesus Christ.

The only religion which has a God who reaches out, as opposed to man having to fulfil conditions imposed by an angry God, is the one of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for you and me.

Don’t put this off. Please don’t. You know what I mean. You know that Jesus Christ, Christianity, the true life of God, is something you’ve skirted with, and this year the circumstances of life have arrested your attention. That is because He loves you.

We can rejoice because we were bound up in a life that was going wrong, but Jesus Christ came and changed us so that His life is within us. I want to please Him with my life. I want my children and grandchildren to know Him.

Jesus Christ came into this world, and Mary’s attention was grabbed by the angel. “You mean Elizabeth is pregnant?” – with God nothing is impossible. What you’ve said is impossible is possible with God.

Prayer (Part 3 of 3)

When should we pray? Jesus prayed early in the morning, in the evening, all night. There was no pattern, just pray, whenever.

1 Corinthians 3:9

1 Corinthians 6:1

Everything starts and finishes with Him, but He involves us. Throughout the Old Testament we can see scriptures where prayer is commanded.

Jeramiah 33:3

Yes, it’s Old Testament, but there are plenty of New Testament scriptures too. “In everything give thanks.”

Psalms 50:15

Isaiah 55:6

Luke 11:5-10

“Ask”. If we treat prayer as some sort of meditation – “I’m thinking about things” – that’s not asking God at all. I’m not saying you shouldn’t meditate. We meditate on the word. You can see God in creation. But it’s imperative for us to ask.

I’m becoming more convinced if you keep a record of what you ask God, you can refer back, because the answer comes. God delights to involve us. Keep a record. I think as a church we should keep a record. Ask, and it shall be given unto you.

Matthew 26:41

Hebrews 4:16

“Prayer is not an end in itself. It’s not something done to be rested in, not something we’ve done about which we are to congratulate ourselves. It’s a means to an end. It’s something we do which brings something in return. Prayer always aims at securing an answer.”

That’s not to puff us up. But as we are co-workers together with Him, it’s God’s delight to answer because as we get involved with Him, so we want to do His will, and He lines everything up so He initiates the prayer acording to His will. But when you pray, aim at securing an answer.

“It is not the mere performance, the attitude or the word, but that answer sent directly from heaven. Answered prayer is the mark of God in our praying. It realises a relationship with the unseen. God accepts our prayers through the atoning blood, and gives His presence and grace in return.”

There used to be a national day of prayer in wartime. In May 1940, the situation in Europe was catastrophic. On May 23, various people issued a call to a national day of prayer to be held on Sunday May 26th. Just 24 hours later Hitler inexplicably ordered his armies to halt. Two days later, the nation gathered to pray. Church attendance sky-rocketed. People pleaded with God to spare those at Dunkirk. In reality it turned out to be a dramatic turning point. An evacuation was undertaken. The German armies remained in place until early June. No one knows why even now. For nine days they shelled Dunkirk, but during this time 336,000 men were saved.

You don’t hear many national days of prayer at the moment. Maybe we will. What caused that was the pressure of the situation. Since we’ve been holding these meetings, it could well be there’s a situation in your life where the circumstances have been such that this talk on prayer has been timely for you.

John 15:5-8

What does it mean to abide in Christ? You are so in line with Him, where He said, “Nevertheless not my will ...” That’s your stance. I want to do God’s will. Translate that into your prayer life, initiated by the Holy Spirit, and it’s in line with what He wants. He prepares things for us to waLuke into. The whole thing is initiated by Him. In such a relationship there is no conflict. I want to do His will, so what I ask will be according to His will. I begin to want what He wants. That’s the bottom line.

Reference to books by Jim Simbala. He would say the whole basis of his church was prayer. “An attentive willing heart is the great need of the hour. Programs, talent and human energy will never accomplish what one man in close touch with God can do.”

Blank sheet of paper. What will it be? Wheel-spin? Or God-directed activity?

It starts with God. By His Holy Spirit He prompts us, lays something on our hearts.
“It is not the utterance of words, alone the felling of desires, but is the advance of the desires to God.”

There's a story about a lady who was in the background of a situation but she was influential because she prayed.

You may not have the energy to knock up a brick wall. But supernatural prayer initiated by God, enacted by you, is a power-house.

Back to the lady. She was a woman twisted and distorted by suffering. In 1872 she was bed-ridden, praying that God would send revival to the church of which she was a member, but could not attend. She had read the story of Moody’s work in Chicago. She prayed that God would send him to the church. She had no means of reaching him. But then the pastor of her church met him, and asked him to speak. He agreed. Moody was surprised when hundreds came forward. Meetings were repeated during the following ten days, and 400 were added to the church. Moody enquired and found out about the girl.

“That girl was a member of my church. When in 1901 I was leaving England for America, I went to see her. She pointed me to a birthday book in which Moody had written, and said to me, ‘Moody wrote that when he came to see me in 1872, and I prayed for him every day. Will you add your name to my book and let me pray for you until you or I go home?’

“I shall never forget writing my name in that book. The room was full of the presence. Marianne Adlard continued to pray until she went home.

“These are the heroes and heroines who labour in prayer out of sight make it possible for those in sight to labour.”

Prayer is simply asking God to do for us what He has promised He will do if we ask Him. God’s doing the thing is as much part of the prayer as is our asking.
Think of three phases of prayer.

Phase 1 is the revelation of the father.

Phase 2 is the mediation of the Son.

Phase 3 is the inspiration of the Spirit.

The revelation of the Father: Christ has made such a revelation of the father as creates in our hearts a desire for prayer. “Father”, “Father”, “Father”. It’s God’s revelation in your heart which enables you to say that too. He has given you by that revelation the desire for communication in prayer.

The mediation of the Son: He has done such work for us as admits us to the presence of God that we might have the right to pray. He ever liveth to make intercession for us. And yet we are co-workers with Him.

The inspiration of the Spirit: Upon the accomplishment of His work and as its crowing glory, He pours forth His spirit who, by indwelling, is the inspiration of our prayer.

You get the idea. The pressures in your life are there prompting you to pray. That’s God-initiated. The outworking is you having access to the Father through the Son. And His delight is for you to become a co-worker with Him as He answers. Keep a record of what you pray.

Quotes: “The indwelling spirit how knows the will of God creates our new aspirations and out of these comes our prayer. Thus, standing in the light of the revealed Father through the mediation of His Son and answering the inspiration of the indwelling spirit, we pray.”

Don’t think if I make a list of who I might pray for, that’s too formal. If you can’t remember things, write them on a list. But in addition, allow for the fact that God may lay other people on your heart too as you pray.

By the mercy of the father, by the merit of the mediation of the Son, by the might of the inspiring spirit, prayer is possible.

Luke 18:1-8

Men ought always to pray and not to faint.

Should we pray for things more than once? Yes – if God hasn’t given the answer, pray again. The circumstances of life are such that if you need the answer, God will answer. He’ll answer in the way He wants, but He will answer.

Luke 18:9-15

As we’ve been talking about prayer, don’t take a pride in the fact that you are beginning to pray.

The second man realised his position and just came to taLuke. He wasn’t building up a CV for himself in prayer. The matter of supreme importance is the cultivation of the habit of prayer. We aren’t going to become a monastery. But it’s a good thing to cultivate prayer. Nothing is more important in our lives.

Matthew 18:19-21

I think it would be good (not in any formalised way) but if anyone wants to link up and form two, do it – and pray together. If Jesus said this, then it can’t be a bad thing to do. We’re a bit reticent, so I’m not going to force the issue. I just want to point out what these verses say. Am I taking this out of context? No. I happen to think this will happen in the church quite naturally.

Account of a lady who prayed for her unsaved husband – an American politician. God challenged her as to whether she was ready for the consequences, but He answered her prayer.

Fascinating to read of different accounts of how God initiates the prayer and causes the answer to come to fulfil His purposes.

Some of you are teachers. Each day bring those children one by one before God. You have a tremendous responsibility as a teacher. You have the curriculum. But in a Christian school you can pray that the way you go about your teaching, your demeanour ... that you’ll communicate the fact that you’re a Christian.

Two things in particular about prayer. It has to be definite, not vague. And the whole idea of importunity – making the most of the moment, and keeping on. At Trinity Jacob refused to let the angel go until he blessed him. Let’s be even more like Trinity in our private life with God.

But there needs also to be submission ...

Submission to the form in which the answer will come.

Submission to the method of the answer.

Submission to the time of the answer.

The common denominator is that there is an answer. He delights to answer and He will.
Specifically at one time, Jesus prayed:

John 17:20-22

That’s very specific. It’s a prayer for you and me. It’s incredibly specific. “This is what I’m praying – that they all may be one, that they may be one in us, that the world may believe thou hast sent me.”

Matthew 9:36-39

Was that just for His disciples to pray? No. I was taking to someone today about the fact that we need to be very aware of who God is sorting out for the future of their life, that they become someone sent of God to become a labourer in His harvest. That will become a known phenomenon that there will be those equipped and sent of God into the harvest. We need to pray that those labourers will be sent.

If you look at the end of most of the letters of Paul, you can see how specific he was about praying.

Ephesians 6:17-19

“Supplication for all saints, and for me – specifically that I may open my mouth boldly.”

Philippians 4:6

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Not meditation, not meandering, but specific.

Colossians 4:2-4

Thessalonians 5:16-19

Thessalonians 3:1-3

Two specifics – that the word may have free course, and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men.

Hebrews 13:18

Words of Wilberforce: “I fear I have not studied the scriptures enough. Surely in the summer recess I ought to read them an hour or two every day ... God will prosper me better if I wait on Him. The experience of all good Christians is that without prayer, things stagnate ...”

I don’t think it was self-flagellation. It was just that he wanted to get the priorities in terms of prayer to God.

Of Colnelius it was said he prayed to God always.

Colossians 4:12

Be specific. Be definite.

Spurgeon: “One time alone in prayer might make us new Christians, changed from poverty of soul to spiritual worth. From trembling to triumphing. We have an example in the life of Jacob. A night in prayer changed the supplanter into a prevailing prince ... Could not we at least now and then in these weary earth-bound years hedge about a single night for such an enriching traffic with the skies? For wealth and science men will quite their warm couches, and can we not do it for men’s souls? ... Up sluggish heart – Jesus calls thee. Rise and go forth to meet the heavenly friend in the place where He manifests Himself.”

Prayer (Part 2 of 3)

One thing from last week. Somehow Almighty God causes us to be co-workers with Him. Everything is prompted by Him – we are prompted to pray in a certain way for a certain person, and Father’s name is glorified.

Matthew 6:5

A clear castigation of those who pray to be seen to be praying. Forget it.

Matthew 6:6-9

We’re not to go on and on for half an hour in the belief that that will cause God to answer. If I’m praying about something and really need an answer, there’s nothing wrong in praying more than once. But don’t simply watch the clock to chalk up brownie points.

God knows what we need, but through His grace and love and mercy He likes us to take part. He loves communication. It was His voice – the communicative ability of God with man – that walked in the garden.

Matthew 6:9-16

Luke 11:1-13

The key part is following on from the Lord’s prayer – “Ask and it shall be given to you. ”We do need to spend time in prayer. It’s not an option. It’s part of us being co-workers with God and it’s Him communicating with us. If your child never spoke to you, it would get to you. Here He is our Father. So, in Matthew and Luke, the whole accent is on the relationship. We saw the story of a man and his friend. I’ll help you – you’re my friend. And so with prayer, the communication is like father and son.

“Our Father”. Jesus always prayed to His father and referred to Him as such. Only once did He refer to Him as God :

Matthew 27:46

This is the only time Jesus is recorded as talking to God as God. Every other time, it was “My father”.

RT Kendal says, “That was the moment all our sins were transferred to Jesus and God turned His back on His one and only son. The sense of fellowship was momentarily forfeited. It was the worst part of His suffering. ”

Father is a term of intimacy . God has a special relationship with His children. He accepts us because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. An unbeliever can call God creator, judge, but he can’t call Him father. There is a special relationship, a father-son relationship, from which that intimacy flows.

Galatians 3:25-26

You’re a child of God by faith. So when you pray, as a child with a father, there is an intimacy, a link. When my children were younger, there was total trust – “What you say, dad, I’ll believe. ”No worries about provision – “I’m a member of a family and he’s my dad. ”

Romans 8:16-18

These verses underline the father/son relationship – children of God, birthed into Christ, relationship with the Father. So when the fatherhood was examined . . . I talked about George Muller last week, and thousands of children went through his orphanages, and it was a life of prayer. It was when he read Psalms 68:5.

Psalms 68:5

That he was inspired to take in orphans, and from then on it was a life of faith,

Muller: “By the help of God this shall be my argument before Him respecting the orphans in their hour of need. He is their father, and I have only to remind Him in order to have it supplied. By the grace of God this is no cause of anxiety to me. These children I have cast upon the Lord the whole work is His. I am able to roll the burden upon my heavenly father. ”

Our relationship is with God our heavenly father. We don’t cringe behind a door. That’s not a relationship of father son. Prayer is sharing with your father. You’re asking Him, talking to Him. Think of a child not talking to their father.

Ecclesiastes 5:3-4

You can be at peace in that father/son relationship. We’re His children, but there also needs to be a sense of reverence.

“Hallowed be thy name” – let His name be treated as holy, given the honour He deserves. When people use the word Jesus off-hand at work, with no relation to Him, when they use Christ as a swear word, it does affect you, I find.

Isaiah 42:8

John 5:43

There was something special about father’s name – hallowed be thy name.

This is God’s church. His name is to be revered here. He is in control of His church. If I were to put my name on this church, it would be contrary to what God is about. It’s His work.

“Thy kingdom come”

John 3:3

The Lord’s prayer is a template of the things which should be involved in prayer. We don’t have to use these precise words. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.

Everything is god-ward. “Our Father, . . . hallowed be thy name . . . thy kingdom come. ”It’s good to think about Him and what He wants when I come to prayer.

So much of praying is man-centred. We don’t think of who God is.

James 4:3

Let’s think about what God is about. “Thy kingdom come. ”It’s not to do with me.

1 John 5:14

It’s good for us to be aware of who God is and what He wants. That’s key. So much is it key that the next petition is . . .

“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. ”We want not just the kingdom to come, but also the will of the King to come about. We’re getting more specific. Prayer doesn’t change God’s will. It changes ours. As we get to know God and learn what He wants and are prompted by the Spirit, He brings our hearts and minds into alignment with what He wants. We can’t force God into a mould and tell Him what to do. Jesus prayed that the cup might pass from Him – yet not as I will, but as thou wilt.

There are two ways God reveals what He wants. He uses the Bible, and there is also the secret will personal to you, which He has planned for you.

Psalms 47:4

Ephesians 2:10

There’s a will of God unique to your life. Your pathway, each one of you, is different from everyone else’s. I want the King’s will in my life. I want His will, not mine. I don’t want sin or rebellion to be in the way. I want Him to be Lord of my life.

John 15:5-8

The key is His words abiding in you. We want everything of God to happen. You’re in alignment. God’s Holy Spirit prompts you to pray in a certain way, and you’re in alignment with God’s will and It’s His delight for you to be a co-worker and see your prayer answered. And the end result is glory to Him, wonderment, thanks for what He has done.

“Give us this day our daily bread”. Our needs – but this comes only after the first god-ward issues.

“And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. ”This isn’t a plea for salvation. When I come to pray I need to have got things sorted out. Just as you clear the decks before taking communion, so here. We’re saved by faith alone, but we need to keep short accounts with God and with other people.

Matthew 6:14-16

You need to keep the right perspective.

“And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. ”Most commentaries say this should really read “deliver us from the evil one”. God doesn’t tempt anyone . . .

James 1:13

It’s simply a prayer that we won’t get caught in the devil’s snare. But we have this promise :

James 4:7

RT Kendal: “The main thing we learn from the Lord’s Prayer is that we are primarily to seek God’s face, not His hand. Jesus wants for us to have fellowship with the Father. ”

The first part of the Lord’s prayer is God-directed. The second part is directed towards us and our needs. And then we return to God again.

Three guiding principles . . .

Hebrews 4:16

1 John 4:16

He’s our heavenly father, the God of love.

Phillipians 4:6

With thanksgiving. Try and get into the habit – and you can learn this – get into the habit of being thankful to God, no matter what you are praying about.

Mark 1:35

He prayed a great while before day. If we were to leave it at that . . . Aside from audience: “Count me out. ”

Matthew 14:23

Mark says before day. Matthew says it’s evening.

Luke 6:12

Jesus prayed before day, in the evening and all night. There is no set time to pray. The key point is to do it. Whatever is convenient is what’s right. It’s not more spiritual to pray in the morning, in the evening, all night. Whatever fits in best is what we should do. But we need to pray.

So much for the when.

John 11:41

John 17:1

Just talking about practicalities, Jesus prayed with His eyes open here. There is no set pattern. With eyes closed, there is less distraction. But it’s not wrong to pray with your eyes open. What matters is that you pray.

In what posture should you pray

Psalms 95:6

1 Kings 8:54

Kneeling. Then kneeling with hands spread to heaven.

Luke 22:39-42

Jesus knelt.

Acts 7:59-60

All examples of people kneeling. The Pharisees tended to stand.

Hebrews 1:3

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

We pray in Jesus’ name, through Him to Father. He is now sat down at the right hand of God. There is no hard and fast rule as to the posture for prayer. It would look odd on the Central Line in the rush hour if you knelt – although I’ve been on a Muslim airline where there is a prayer mat and the passengers knelt down.

It doesn’t matter when you pray, whether your eyes are open, your posture. The key point is to pray. Common sense says that if you kneel it makes you humbled. But we know that you can pray driving in the car. I used to love praying on the underground – I used to love the idea I could pray to God through the ground. You knew you were talking to God.

Just make sure that the posture is suitable for you to be able to pray. Getting on your knees doesn’t change you. If you’re knackered, getting on your knees won’t change that.

1 Peter 3:7

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Talking to husbands. Our relationship with our wives matters. It’s like keeping things right with those close to you. Don’t think you can pray in whatever posture without having things right with your wife. Your prayers will be hindered.

I think what God is doing in these studies is to cause each of us to increase in our relationship of faith in Jesus Christ, to grow and share that relationship with God. In time that will have a knock-on effect with us corporately. I don’t think we’ll end up having prayer meetings. But as we learn now to pray more individually, so if God wants us to pray specifically for something corporately, it will happen more easily.

Acts 12:1-5

James had just been killed. Peter had been caught. What would happen to him. there was instant and earnest prayer.

Acts 12:7-18

I don’t blame them for being astonished. What were they praying. Was it that he wouldn’t be killed. Probably. Could they have thought God could have got him out of the prison like that. Probably not. What an answer to prayer. Never rule out anything God can do in answer to your prayer. He will answer in the way He chooses.

I have no doubt there will come a time when we will do the same. Not for the same reason. But who knows What I do know is that that was a key part of the early church. I don’t think things were different then. But what an answer to prayer

I’ve spoken to a few people in the last few days who have quoted wonderful things to me – specific answers to prayer.

Five things that we as Christians have in Jesus Christ as far as prayer is concerned.

1. The Christian has the teaching of Christ.

2. The Christian the example of Christ.

3. The Christian has the blood of Christ – and there is a new and living way though what Jesus has done on the cross.

4. The Christian has the intercession of Christ. He ever liveth to make intercession for us.

5. The Christian has the name of Christ. The Christ one – the Christian. The name above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow.

Isaiah there some magic in asking prayers in Jesus’ name No. But it’s as if all prayer is bound up in this relationship. We are co-workers together with Him. We haven’t uncovered some formula, to which we append the name of Jesus and things automatically work. We’re not talking about that. We’re talking about a relationship between father and son. The glory is to His name and we go forward from glory to glory. Very practical. Very real.
